Licence brief

Check the person, then the pharmacy.

Ask for full names and licence types. A business name alone leaves too much out.

Medical doctors have separate board searches

MD and DO are two kinds of medical doctors. DO stands for doctor of osteopathic medicine; it names a kind of doctor, rather than an assistant. Arizona has a separate board for each kind.

Arizona’s Medical Board has an MD search showing the doctor’s licence and published board decisions, called public orders. Read any decision listed and ask the board what it means for that doctor’s permission to treat patients.

The Arizona Board of Osteopathic Examiners oversees DO doctors and has its own licence search.

Compare the result with the name given to you.

Other licence types need their own checks

Nurse practitioners have advanced nursing training in how to assess and treat patients.

The Arizona Nursing Board has links for checking nursing licences and certificates for extra roles, including nurse practitioners. These are called advanced-practice certificates. A basic nursing licence alone does not answer whether someone may prescribe; ask the board to confirm that person’s prescribing permission.

The health professional called a physician assistant (PA) holds a licence distinct from the licences for doctors and nurses. Arizona’s PA Board has a public search. Ask that board whether the named PA can prescribe the medicine being offered.

Ask about the authority to prescribe the proposed medicine, as well as the general licence.

Remote care may use a registration

For telehealth, or care given from a distance, some professionals with another state’s licence can register through the Arizona board for their profession under rules checked October 3, 2026. They must meet Arizona’s registration and care requirements.

This registration allows qualifying care at a distance for patients in Arizona. It gives a different kind of permission from a full Arizona licence, so check that it covers your visit.

Ask the board to confirm the person’s registration or other legal permission if the licence search leaves you unsure.

A pharmacist and a pharmacy are different records

Arizona’s Pharmacy Board gives pharmacists their licences and pharmacy outlets their permits, under rules checked October 3, 2026.

A pharmacy outside Arizona sending medicine here also needs Arizona’s permit for out-of-state pharmacies and authority to operate where it is based.

Ask the board to confirm the permit for the exact pharmacy named on your medicine.

An empty history is not a quality rating

Arizona restricts the licence records shown on board websites under rules checked October 6, 2026.

Request earlier public decisions on that person’s licence from the board. Meeting minutes and notices may also contain public information. The law treats those meeting records separately from other records on the board’s website.

A website may leave out older decisions or complaints. Some complaints, including pending investigations, cannot be disclosed. Ask the board which public records are available and how to request them.

Keep a useful question in view.
